Getting that Job- Resume and Phone Interview Tips

By: Green Panda | Date posted: February 03, 2011 (5:00 am)

Are you looking at a great job opportunity, but are reluctant to apply because of your resume? Are you nervous about doing a phone interview? You don’t have to be. With some effort you can increase your chances of getting a face to face interview and hopefully your dream job.

Resume Tips to Help You Shine

It doesn’t take much to get your resume noticed.

  1. Match your resume to the job. Your resume should not look the same for every job you apply to. Try to tailor it to the position you’re applying for. If you include an objective, make it a perfect match for the job opening.
  2. Choose your words carefully. Clarity can have a huge impact when someone is reading your resume. Do you come off as a leader or does your job description reflect that you merely did what was required?
  3. Include concrete numbers with your resume. Be as accurate as possible when including results of your work. Did you improve customer sales or did you improve customer sales by 23% in 3 months?
  4. Prioritize your accomplishments. Put your best first. Don’t have the recruiter wade halfway through your resume to find out that you helped developed a new metric for the department. Redesign your resume to highlight your best moments.
  5. Always include a cover letter for every resume you submit. Your cover letter is your chance to explain your resume in the best light and why you’re the perfect candidate for the position. Sending a generic cover letter is a waste of time for everyone.

Should You Use a CV Services?

I mentioned CV services before, depending on what you need they can be a good investment. However, if you have access to your university’s career center you may find what you need for free.

Phone Interview Tips

Your resume stood out and now you’re schedule for a phone interview. If you want to ace your next phone interview, here are some tips you can use:

  1. Be completely focused. Treat your phone interview like a face to face one. Don’t do a phone interview in a busy location. Find a quiet spot with no distractions so you can give you complete attention to the interviewer.
  2. Have the right paperwork by you. Put your best foot forward – have your resume, notes about the company, and some prepared interview questions ready.
  3. Don’t eat food or chew gum! It seems like common sense, but I’ve spoken to people who think it’s ok to chew on gum while speaking on the phone. It’s distracting and can leave a bad impression with the interviewer.
  4. Remember to smile while on the phone. It’ll help you come across as friendly to the person on the other line and it can help you to relax a bit.

First House Related Expenses

First House Related ExpensesAs you sit down to create your first ever house hold budget I hope that you’re ready for the first house related expenses that you’ll now be hit with. As we all know by now, buying a house is not a cheap option. If you’re switching from renting to owning, or going from living with your parents to owning, you’ll be in for a nice surprise. I’m not here to scare you at all. I just want all of you to be well prepared financially in advance so that you don’t go into credit card debt.

Let’s take a look at first house related expenses that you will have to deal with:

Direct first house related expenses.

Closing costs/lawyer.

As you save up for your first ever house hold budget you must understand that you’ll be hit with closing costs. These are the costs that you pay when you purchase a property and they vary depending on the location. I mentioned the lawyer in this section because you usually end up paying both at the same time. Make sure that you at least have over a thousand dollars saved for this.

Home inspection.

Often times you might need a thorough home inspection done on the property. This is essentially done so that you can protect yourself and be well aware of what you’re getting yourself into with your first home purchase. You don’t want to find out that your new home needs extensive repairs once you’ve already moved in.

Mortgage payments.

This is an obvious first house related expense. Along with a new home come mortgage payments. These will eat up a significant portion of your income and I hope that you’re ready to deal with this.

Property taxes.

You pay property taxes which are based on the value of your home. Simply put, the more expensive your home is, the more you’ll pay for property taxes. You can’t get away from this expense either.

Insurance.

Usually when you apply for a mortgage you’ll be required to show proof of homeowners insurance. The price here will once again vary depending on the value of your property and the area that you live in.

Utilities.

When you rent a one-bedroom apartment the heating bill and utilities won’t be too much. As you move into your first home and work on your first house hold budget you realize that utilities can get pretty expensive.

Now we can get a bit creative and take a look at the first home related expenses that are not so well known…

Indirect first house related expenses.

Repair and maintenance work.

No matter how great your first home is, there will be the temptation to do some repairs and basic maintenance work. From creating a bar area in your basement to setting up your own home office, you’re likely to spend lots of money on maintenance work on your new home.

Increased consumption.

The odds are strong that you’ll generally spend more money when you purchase a home. With your new found space you’re going to want to spend money on things you never imagined.

Furniture.

We all know that every new home needs new furniture. You’re not going to want to put old furniture in your new home. The cost of furniture will vary depending on how many rooms in your new home you want to decorate and what kind of quality you’re looking for.

Yard work.

I’ve been living in a house for most of my life so I know how expensive yard work can be. Maintaining your yard will cost you a lot of money and time. Shoveling snow, cutting grass, watering plants, and planting a garden take plenty of time. These activities will also cost you a decent amount of money. A lawn mower is not cheap, nor is a snow blower. Be prepared for the amount of time and money that your new yard will require.

I hope that now you understand all of the first house related expenses that come along with your first time home purchase. We also looked at how-to get a mortgage in 3 easy steps, how-to pick the right home for a first time home buyer, and how you can buy a home in 5 easy steps.

Were any first house related expenses missed in this post?

You Can Save Money With Facebook Deals

By: Kristina | Date posted: February 01, 2011 (3:45 am)

Social Media is the new wave of interactive technology, and it’s not going away. Everyday social media outlets such as Facebook are expanding, changing, adding new features, and improving the user experience.  We may all be friends with our favourite sports stars on Facebook or we may be fans of our favourite authors on Facebook. Now, we can also save money by using the Facebook Deals mobile application for our Smart Phones.

What is Facebook Deals?

Facebook Deals is a new feature that allows Facebook mobile users to view and redeem up to the minute deals from their favourite merchants and vendors.

Facebook Deals allows Facebook mobile users to search deals from their favourite merchants and vendors and then redeem them in store for discounts.  If we are out shopping we can “check in” to Facebook Deals and view coupons from our favourite stores.  The virtual coupon will be displayed on the touch screen of our smart phone; we can redeem the coupon by showing it to the merchant while we check out.

How is Facebook Deals different from Groupon?

Facebook Deals is only available to Facebook mobile application users.  These deals are not available to everyone, as they are “in store” virtual coupons that can only be redeemed at the check out by showing the coupon on our smart phone.

Facebook Deals do not have to be purchased in advance as needs to be done with Groupon.  While we are out shopping we can “check in” to Facebook Deals to find up to the minute deals from our favourite vendors.

How Much does Facebook Deals Cost?

Facebook Deals was created to increase advertising revenue for Facebook.  There is no cost to Facebook mobile users.  Unfortunately, Facebook Deals is only available to Facebook mobile users.  There are no commissions and no fees associated with redeeming Facebook Deals at the checkout in our favourite stores.  Facebook receives their revenue from the participating merchants and vendors who join Facebook Deals.

What Kind of Deals are Available from Facebook?

Facebook Deals can range from a free gift with purchase to a percentage off of our total sale.  Facebook Deals can also be a promotion on a specific product such as a 2 for 1 deal or a specific discount on an item such as a $5 pair of jeans.  The deals are always changing.  We will have to “check in” to view all up to the minute Facebook Deals.
