Public transportation is not a good option in Southern California. The cities are just too big and too many of them to have a good, efficient system.

Unless you plan to only stay in one small area, rent a car.

Besides amusement parks you might want to see the Getty museum.

Rent a car, Mike. Trust me. The LA bus system sucks - except for the Orange Line. The town is built for personal vehicles - public transportation is an after-thought.

Best,

The public transportation out here in L.A. isn't bad but [in my opinion] not as good as it could be.

If you're strictly sticking with LA the city there's a ton of connections and buses, plus the red or purple line will take you anywhere from Hollywood to Union Station. Plus, you don't have to deal with L.A. traffic, the drivers...or the lack of parking spaces/high parking fees. Unfortunately, buses can get really crowded and slow and a majority stop running if you really want to stay out late. If you want to go to places like Six Flags, Long Beach Aquarium, Disneyland, or the Getty its sometimes easier to just take a car.

I'd suggest public transport if staying within the limits of the city but a car if you're going outside of the hub.

Helpful links : www.metro.net [there's a trip planner]
www.metrolinktrains.com [if you want to go to Disneyland (or, ahem, catch an Angel's game in Anaheim) this will drop you right next to it. However, the last train leaving that station is around 10 pm...]
                         www.zipcar.com [if you're already a member, it's awesome; if you're not it's an option?]
