Eating Out with New Job

By: Green Panda | Date posted: October 05, 2009 (11:43 am)

This new job has been great in terms of increasing our monthly income, but I’ve been eating more lunches out. I do a lot of driving around town for the job and I haven’t packed my lunches as often as I should. I find myself trying to find something convenient which usually means spending some cash for not so healthy food.

I must resist the lure of fast food to improve my waist and wallet.

Realizing How Work Affects Me Eating Out

Grabbing whatever is quick and easy has been a weakness of mine. I’m going to cut down on my take out lunches to 3x week for the next 2 weeks and then drop down to eating out once or twice a week for the rest of the year. It helps if I remember that the money I’m saving is going towards a goal, so the money saved will go towards the joint savings account.

I do enjoy eating lunch with a friend, but these take out lunches have just been me and they haven’t really offered good food. I’d better better off making something at home a few times a week. I’ve written about some quick and easy recipes that can be used as brown bag lunches the next day like pizzanachos, chili, and stew. Today’s lunch will be a tasty honey ham and cheddar cheese sandwich and a fruit cup on the side.

I grabbed the lunch food last week and that has made it much easier to make a sandwich in the morning. I’m also considering grabbing lunch at cheaper places, like Costco and saving some money. If you are going to eat out, be reasonable and go over your monthly budget.

Eating Out Tips:

  • Dig to find local spots. Asking your co-workers, neighbors, and friends can pay off if you find a great place with wonderful food.
  • Make a second meal on leftovers. I fill up on my bread or chips (depending on the place). I’m not acting greedy, but I do enjoy what they offer. If salad is included with a dinner, then eat the entire salad. It fills you up and it’s generally good or you. Two meals for the price of one!
  • Get a discount. See if they have lunch/dinner specials or use a site like Restaurant.com to get a deal on gift certificates. Sometimes you can get a $25 gift certificate for $10 or less!
  • Mix Appetizers. Sometimes you can get a good deal by having two appetizers.
  • Don’t be frugal with your tip. That should go without saying, but if you got good service, please tip accordingly.

Weekly Round-Up: Visiting Duplin’s Vineyard

By: Green Panda | Date posted: October 04, 2009 (11:02 am)

Yesterday you probably saw on twitter that we went to Duplin’s Winery to take a tour. We headed down there with a couple of friends and had a wonderful time. They give a tour of their production facility followed by tastings of 11 wines and 3 wine kits. The tour and tasting were free and we got a discount on some of the wine we got.

Our tour guide, William, did a fantastic job leading the group through the process.Duplin Winery sign

Here’s our official wine scores (1-5, 5 being great) for the tasting samples. My husband’s scores are in blue.:

  • Carlos (3, 3.5)
  • Magnolia (4, 3.5)
  • Beaufort Bay: (5, 4) This was an estate wine grown right there in Rose Hill.
  • Naughty and Nice (3.5, 4)
  • Burgundy (3, 3.5)
  • Pink Magnolia (5, 4) This was one of my favorites of the tastings. I grabbed a bottle to take home.
  • Christmas Wine (3.5, 3)
  • Christmas Eve (4, 4)
  • Uncorked (4, 5)
  • Sweet Caroline (4, 4)
  • Blackberry (5, 4) This wine is made with 100% blackberries from Kings Mountain, NC if my notes are correct.
  • Peach Bellini Kit (4, 5)
  • CosmoRita Kit (4, 5)
  • Wine-a-Rita Kit (5,5)

We’re not wine experts by any means, so please take our scores with a grain of salt. This was our first visit to a winery and since it went well, we’re going to go to another vineyard. If you’re looking for something fun, educational, and affordable, I really recommend you visit Duplin.

September 2009: Financial Progress Update

By: Green Panda | Date posted: October 01, 2009 (10:05 pm)

home table

We had a small and relaxing vacation early in September. Not having an internet connection or TV was a good thing and we got to recharge. I managed to get a lot of writing done and had sailing lesson. While I enjoyed it, I completely forgot almost every sailing term thrown at us.

Compared to the past few months, this month has been low key. I’m now ready to get out.  If the weather is good, we’re going out of town this weekend to visit a vineyard and take the tour.

Since you have an ideas of what we did with our free time, I guess I can jump to a review of our financial goals.

Our Financial Goals for 2009

  • Debt: We would like to pay off my car loan by March 31, 2009.Goal Met.
  • Debt: I’d like to reduce our expenses in September by 10%. Goal Met
  • Spending: We’re going to limit eating out $100 this month. Goal Met.
  • Savings: We want to have 3 months worth of expenses saved by December 31, 2009.Work in Progress
  • How We Did in September on Our Financial Goals

Debt: We’ve been able to cut down expenses as we didn’t have the air conditioning as much as we did this summer.

Spending: I was surprised how well we did with this. We didn’t mean to cut back; I think it’s now become a habit to think before we go and eat out. We had a couple of great dinners with some new and old friends.

Savings: I’m getting my first paycheck next week from the temporary job and 80% is going to the joint savings account. Since it’s a short project, I want to be as aggressive as possible.
