The goals item definitely helped us. A close second is making sure my wife is involved in monitoring the budget, not only setting it.

This keeps both of us aware of what’s going on with our money and stop those annoying moments when the spouse comes home with a new (fill in the blank) and says “Oops! I thought we had the money.”
