If you’re still on the fence about using the  Cash for Clunkers program, you better decide fast.  Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced that the CARS program will end this Monday (August 24 , 2009) at 8PM EDT. The reason given is that the program will be running out of money again and the government doesn’t want to go more than the $3 billion allocated for the program.

Can’t wait to win my new laptops in your giveaway ;)

I think people had better be careful as they’re running out to trade in their clunkers this weekend – make sure to read the fine print on the contracts you’re signing. If you don’t, you could be liable for the $4500 voucher if the government rejects the dealer’s submission (some of them are putting in clauses saying you have to pay if it doesn’t go through).

It is unfortunate that due to the popularity of the program some potential buyers may run out of money but the program has its’ benefits. It would be nice to see it renewed every two years or so. This way, those who were not ready for an opportunity like this will have another chance.

Beside, cars will continue to get older every two years and more cars may become clunkers so why not make this a recycling effort, giving breaks to taxpayers who take the initiative just like we do with “green” home improvement.

Good advice; I’ve heard about some of the dealers being a bit shady. My advice is to not rush and read everything.

I like the idea of going green, but my only questions is, where the money is coming from? Our cars are 9 and 15 years old, but their mileage doesn’t qualify them as clunkers. Hopefully, we’ll have some money saved up when they break down and we’ll get another fuel efficient car.
