We’re getting ready for a little get together tonight. My husband is in charge of the sausage dip appetizer and I’m working on the roast chicken.
When I was in college we tried to find ways to have a good time without going broke. We still use the tips because we’re able to enjoy ourselves, saving money is just a benefit.
- Find a restaurant with a fantastic early bird special and invite friends. There’s a local spot in our old place that offers 50 cent tacos and half off drinks. Get a drink, eat a bunch of tacos, and it will cost less than $15 for two persons! We found a great Italian place downtown where lunch is big and the prices are half of dinner. We can also order pizza by the slice, which is great for smaller meals.
- Host a movie/video game night at your place. Having a small party is a lot of fun without a huge hassle. You provide the entertainment and drinks and your guests bring some food. It’s a win-win situation. The Nintendo Wii is a great game system for parties. We making an appetizer and some chicken and our friends are making the rest.It reduces a lot of stress and there is usually some leftovers.
- Play tennis, volleyball, basketball, or baseball at the local parks. It’s free, you can hang with friends, and get a great workout.
What are some of your tips for having a good time on a budget?

Since I’m still a university student, I take advantage of all the free stuff the college gives away. I managed to score two free tickets to the local symphony for Saturday. There are also free plays, movies, and other events like a battle of the bands and arts and crafts events held on campus.
Other than that, I like to cook for my friends. I get to try out a new recipe, and they get the home-style cooking they miss. Some of my friends live in apartments with pools, so that’s another free entertainment option.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this post. Being with people you want to be with makes almost any activity fun. I like the idea of a video/game night. We have some friends we really enjoy getting together with and we have spent some pretty competitive nights around a board game.
@Kris: It’s amazing the great deals you can get as a college student. Thanks for mentioning free events around campus. Just getting out of the house is fun.
@Jeff Thanks! We have some creative, intelligent, and fun friends, so it makes it much easier to have a good time without spending a ton of money.
Sometimes competitive board games are the most fun.
There are plenty of cheap ways to have fun, and once it gets warmer out, outdoor activities are the best. In terms of going out though, the best bang for your bucks is happy hour. You can take advantage or drink and apps specials and instead of getting a meal, split a few diff apps between people. That way you get variety, get full, get drinks, have a good time out and don’t have to spend like crazy. Also can lead to an earlier night in if that is your plan.
@ Thanks Craig!
