I just started my new job and I have software training all this week. My new manager mentioned that bringing lunch in to save time and some money. Seeing as some of our goals include building the emergency fund up a few more months and have a house down payment ready this year, this new income will be used wisely.
I’m brown bagging my lunch to save money, have healthier food, and have a chance to chat with my co-workers. I enjoy eating out for work lunches, but eating out consistently and without a plan can take a drain your bank account.
Tips For Better Brown Bag Lunches
- Upgrade your lunches by redirecting funds. Some people think that they have to cut their food spending to save money, but that’s a horrible idea. Look to spend money better ingredients.
- Use sandwich bags for portion control. I noticed many snacks are now packaged in convenient single servings. Of course, you have to pay for this convenience. Grab a value size package of your favorite snacks and use a ziploc your portions. It’ll help your waist and wallet.
- Try mixing it up. Consider packing some hummus dip the vegetables instead of just ranch. Turn your regular salad into a taco salad.
- Pasta can be a great lunch. You can add some meat and cheese to have an easy to make and eat lunch. I had some shrimp pasta leftovers today.
- Use fast food condiments: Next time you grab something from a fast food chain, grab a few more packets of your favorite condiments for your lunches.

Man… I know this is something I need to do much better and everytime I read a well put together post it brings it back to my attention. See, I am fairly good at taking PBJ to work, however having a PBJ or two everyday, is not only unhealthy but also starts to wear you down. I need to do a better job of committing to take the time to pack other various left-overs to keep myself refreshed and on top of things!
Thanks for the kick in the butt!
Grabbing condiments from fast-food places will only raise prices for everyone. No, thanks. It’s not a horrible idea to save money on food, either. Lots of convenience food is overpriced and bad for you. Save money by eating healthy leftovers from whatever you cooked for dinner. If that’s too boring, you can freeze it and eat it the next week for some variety.
I brown bag all the time. It’s healthier, and cheaper and also pretty easy. Def saves money on eating out. The problem is though, sometimes I just get cravings like today. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made (yea I eat like a 5 yr old sometimes) but was just craving a wrap and went out instead.
@Baker: Thanks!I love PB&J sandwiches too! It does get old after awhile. Mixing it up can help. I like eating out once in awhile can be fun, bu it can drain your wallet quickly.
@Kris: Grabbing a huge amount can eventually raises prices, but grabbing a few isn’t a problem as companies already account for a certain amount of condiments with food purchases. I used to work in a fast food restaurant and they allocate per customer. If I choose use my share for later instead of with the meal, what’s the difference?
