I checked my inbox today and I got an email from Ramit Sethi on a challenge to save $1000

Here’s how it works: Each day in November, I’ll post one suggestion to cut your spending. If you spend time each day working on the day’s post, the vast majority of you will save over $1,000 each month. Even if you don’t, saving $700 is sure better than nothing. I’ll post tips for the first 15 days. For the last 15 days, I’ll turn to I Will Teach You To Be Rich readers to submit your best frugality tips.

Here’s why I’m excited to try this out:

  • Practical and usable tips. What I enjoy about Ramit’s site is that he is very focused on giving advice that many people will actually do.
  • The goal amount is big enough to motivate me. We could use an extra $1000 to go into our pockets (actually saving account).

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be participating and blogging about the 30 Day Challenge. Every couple of days, I’ll be sharing how I’m doing with challenge. For the last 15 day, I’m going to share my thoughts on whether it’s feasible for me to use the tips or if I have to tweak it a bit.

Please come join the challenge and leave your thoughts on it as you come along.

  • Tip#1 $45/month
  • Tip#2 $10/month

How My Retirement is Currently Doing?

My Retirement Account Update

I checked my retirement account today, just to see what shape it is in. I knew it was going to be down, but I didn’t he an exact number. I check my portfolio in detail about once a quarter. So far this year, my portfolio is down 21.07%. I’m not happy about it, but I’m not panicking.

Looking at the big picture we see that the average return from the stock market has been 11.69% from 1928 to 2007. Past performance doesn’t predict future prospects with certainty, but it does give us an idea of what to expect.

Another reason I’m not going to pull money out of my retirement fund is because I’ll be hit with tax penalties.

How Dollar Cost Averaging with Investing Helps

Each time you invest, you’re buying a bit at a time. Many choose to automate their investments at a fixed rate. The same amount is spent but the amount of shares you buy changes. I like index funds and when the price is low, I can get more shares for the same price I’ve been putting in.

As time progresses, I’m hoping that overall my investments will grow and put me in a better position to retire (either earlier or have more cash).

Gas Prices Are Down, But I’m Being Careful

I filled my car today and it was $2.64/gallon today, a 10 cent drop from yesterday. It’s great to see fillups go from $50 to around $35. As you can see by the lovely chart above, my city is seeing gas drop a bit in the past month.

The skeptic in me doesn’t think this trend will continue and I ave decided to keep my conservation habits even as gasoline is getting a it less expensive.

  • Removed excess clutter and weigh from my car. My trunk was a mess and had a lot of things in the back. I donated a couple bags of clthes finally and organized it a bit. Less weight means better mileage.
  • Carpooled when possible. A few of my friends and I try to carpool. It saves on gasoline and on some wear and tear with our own cars.
  • Combined errands to minimize trips.  Instead of doing several trips around the city, I bunch errands together that are in the same vicinty. I also learned to not be as impulsive with driving around.

I am not happy when gas prices rise, but hopefully I’m learning to be wiser with using my car.

Has fallng gasoline prices affected your car driving lifestyle?

Carnival of Debt Reduction #163: KOTOR

By: Green Panda | Date posted: October 27, 2008 (7:04 am)

One of my favorite all time games is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I love the storyline that was created for it. The mission and characters were well thought out and getting to choose what path to take was fun.  I have both the original and the sequel and have been waiting to see if another one will come out.

I heard this week that there is going to be an online game called The Old Republic. It’s based on the series and will be an MMO.  To celebrate the news I decided to share some of my favorite characters with this week’s Carnival of Debt Reduction.

Let’s get started with our carnival!

Carth Onasi is an honorable pilot and fighter. He’s able to work with other on coming up with a solution. If he can, he’ll share what he know with others to benefit them.

Misson Vao is skilled and resourceful. She’s far smarter than most youths her age.

Jolee Bindo doesn’t see the world in black or white. He meditates and considers the subtleties of matters.

G0-T0 always examines all the angles and is cautious when dealing with credits.

Thanks to LucasArts, Bioware, and Obsidian Entetainment for the characters.

It’s been a busy week for me and I’m sure some of you noticed a few changes. First off, I’m working on a new design for  the site. I want to keep the site from being too cluttered while having useful information around. I liked the last general layout, but there were too many bugs and I’m not technically saavy enough to fix them. This design will hopefuly free up more time for writing posts. Please leave your feedback in the comments. This site is (always) a work in progress and I’m working on it step by step.

I also have it set up where you can download for free the posts as an mp3. Since quite a few of my readers are busy college students, you may not have time to read my posts every day. Now you can take them with you. Apple has also approved the podcasts for the Itunes store ,which is great since I have my podcasts up for free.

As always, subscribing to the site is the easiest way to be updated. I’m just trying to make it easier for everyone to follow the site.

Tomorrow I’ll have the Carnival of Debt Reduction up. It seems that the Blog Carnival submission site is down, which will make for an unusally short Carnival of Debt Reduction. If you can submit by 9pm EST tonight, I’ll review it for the Carnival tomorrow.

We had a great time at the state fair this weekend and we’re spending our Sunday night relaxing a bit. I love thefood, but this year I noticed a lot more deep fried things. Candy bars, mac and cheese, twinkies, cheesecake, and some others I can’t remember.
I got a kabob, pizza, funnel cake, and some lemonade. Delicious and totally fine with me since we must’ve done a couple of miles walking around the place.
The economy was a theme this week with personal posts, so I’m sharing the ones that will help you be more informed and proactive on handling your money.

Car Loan Balance Update

I just checked the balance on my car loan and the last payment went through. My balance is now $1,179.90! I’m so excited looking at it. Special thanks to my husband! :D

Once the car is paid off my plan is to have 1/2 to paying off my student loan debt and the other 1/2 to put into a high yield savings account. I’m going to automatically schedule the amount so I can actually put the money to good use.

An observation I made while writing an update to my goals for this year:

The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Don’t give up; take it step by step. If you make a mistake, modify your course, change gears and keep your focus.

How have you been doing with your goals?
