Carrying Loose Change Saved Me Some Money

By: Green Panda | Date posted: September 30, 2008 (1:21 pm)

I cleaned up my car last week with some help fro my brother. I found some money buried under the seats and carpets. I have a little change ‘jar’ that I placed the money in. Twice I was going to pick up food and use the money and I instead got treated from my car pool group (I was driving by the way). Sweet.

Having a change jar can be an asset

I wasn’t doing using the change jar because I was poor, but I want to use the money I actually already have instead of pulling from the bank account. Since I started last week, I have about $9 in my coin jar.

Off Topic, But Important: Chemical Irritant Empties Mosque

By: Green Panda | Date posted: September 30, 2008 (12:41 pm)

A friend sent me a link to an off topic, but an important piece of news. He noted that it’s not getting the coverage it should. I didn’t see it on my news channel, so just in case you didn’t hear about it either, here’s the news story:

Chemical irritant empties Islamic Society of Greater Dayton’s mosque

Update: Islamic Society baffled by incident at worship service

DAYTON — Baboucarr Njie was preparing for his prayer session Friday night, Sept. 26, when he heard children in the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton coughing. Soon, Njie himself was overcome with fits of coughing and, like the rest of those in the building, headed for the doors.

I hope they find who did this.

Weekly Round-Up: Wachovia & Citi

It’s been a rough couple of weeks as the news keeps highlighting how big this financial crisis is now. The news is now focusing on Wachovia and a possible acquisition by Citigroup. I bank with Wachovia so I’ll be on the lookout. I’m not too worried, as the money is with FDIC limites. We’l just wait and see how this goes down.

If you’re loking for something different than what you see on the news, Make Love, Not Debt has my guest post on  communication and money.

Rolled Over Into a Vanguard IRA

By: Green Panda | Date posted: September 23, 2008 (9:04 pm)

Ok, so we finally mailed the paperwork to rollover my husband’s 401(k) into a Vanguard Roth IRA. The actual process took around total of 30 minutes. Sending out the paperwork? Over 2 weeks. We want to make sure his retirement investing goes further as we rollover his 401k account.

Here’s how we rolled over my husband’s 401(k) into a Roth IRA:

Organized his old account’s paperwork. Before you rollover a 401(k) account, make sure you have the old account information by your side to save some time. I was still missing some information, so I also had to log in to the old account’s website.

Opened An Account At Vanguard. We went to Vanguard’s to start the process. You can fill out the paperwork online, but you have to print, sign, and mail it.

Chose Initial Investments.  Vanguard has wonderful index funds to choose from that are low cost and perform well long term.

Took 17 days to mail the paperwork. Someimes you’re just your own worst enemy.

Lesson learned

If you’ve been putting off getting your finances in order, get it down now. Don’t wait like we did.

Weekly Round-Up: The Force Unleashed

We got The Force Unleashed midnight Tuesday this past week.  I’ve been having a fun time playing it and I hope by Tuesday to have finish the game. If anyone is thinking of getting it, I posted my brief review below this week’s top 10 picks.

I’m not a hardcore Star Wars fan (i.e my husband), but I loved Knights of the Old Republic and Jedi Academy. Give a good story, put some Jedi Force powers, and I’ll try it.

This week had a lot of posts dealing with the economy in the United States due to recent news on some major financial institutions. The posts I picked seem applicable, dealing with savings, money management, do it yourself tips, and employment options. I hope you enjoy them.

The Force Unleashed Review

I’m Darth Vader’s apprentice and I can do anything! Weee, I’m dashing through the air! I see you behind the wall Rodian.

Loved

Storyline and Characters: I really liked the story with the game, particularly how it works with the Star Wars time line. The characters were interesting, I just wished the story was a bit longer. My favorite character is PROXY. He reminds me of a nicer version of HK-47  from Knights of the Old Republic.

I’m not giving away big plot points, but it is worth getting the game. Vader is so evil and it’s fun to watch him do his thing.

Force Powers: I loved, loved, loved it! The effects are very cool and on more than one mission, I stayed in a room until I completely ripped it apart with my powers. My favorite? I’m going with  Force Lightening.

The Stormtoopers are reacting how I felt about the Imperial Star Destroyer mission. Pain.

Hated

Glitches: I lost count on some glitches in the game. At the very least, I didn’t get the same glitch twice and in the course of the game, there were infrequent. For example I managed to get embedded into a rock while staring down a rancor. Another problem I have is with the targeting system. The game auto targets and it gets it wrong a few times. I’m battling Vader now and I’m targeting everything but him.

Imperial Star Destroyer: Insane sequence and I probably spent over an hour on this one. I was so happy when this was over which is a shame, since I liked that best from the commercial.

Verdict: I’m glad we have the game and I’ll play it again, as I still do with Knights of the Old Republic (which is still my favorite Star Wars game). It’s a fun game and will keep you busy for a bit.

Cleaning Up Bank Accounts And Renewing Our Rental Lease

By: Green Panda | Date posted: September 19, 2008 (9:26 am)

It’s been a busy week with Merill Lynch, WaMu, AIG, and Lehman Brothers in a mess. Even today here are talking about the total costing taxpayers $1 trillion dollars. Is it time to panic? No. It is time to get be serious about your finance, though.

Now is always a good time to start getting your plans together and take steps to improve your situation.  I noticed some others have commented on how they’re faring and I decided to share our situation.

What’s Our Take on the Economic Mess?

Our plans are pretty much the same even with this financial mess stirring around. Get Rich Slowly offered this advice and we’re on the same page. I’ll add my take with the his advice.

  • Don’t panic. Are these bad times financially? Yes, but it can be handled with a clear head and a plan .
  • Tune out the media. I’ve had to turn off the TV because every 5 minutes in a newscast there seems to be an air of panic. I prefer online or the paper to get news. It’s easier to pick up and put it down.  Many stations offers news of doom, but very little offer some practical solutions.
  • Remember your goals. Reevaluate your financial goals. If you can’t pay down debt as aggressively as you want due to economic hardships, then pay down as much as you can.
  • Focus on the fundamentals. Pay yourself first, have an emergency fund up, reduce you credit card debt, increase the positive difference between income and expenses, and set aside some money for others.
  • Know your risk tolerance. You can get stocks, funds, and index funds at a lower price than before and save for a retirement in the future. Just don’t get ahead of yourself and buy whatever you see.
  • Educate yourself. The more you know the less panicked you’ll be.

Ramit also has a three-minute video with tips for today’s economy that is pretty helpful.

In case you’re wondering what our financial goals are and how we use our joint accounts, we’ll share some.

Our Current Financial Goals:

How we organize our joint finances:

  • ING Checking: This is the account where we pay our ‘joint’ bills like rent, groceries, light, Internet, etc. We prefer this account as it has no minimum balances, no fees, and it earns interest.  We have a buffer built in just in case something crazy comes up.
  • ING Savings: This is our emergency fund/housing fund account.  We like to keep the money together in the bank and then we ‘separate’ it on a spreadsheet. I like to see a larger number, as it gives me motivation to make it grow.

We’re fine with where our money is and don’t have plan to change it. Our joint and individual banks are FDIC insured. Since our balance is less than $100,000, it’s covered.

I did close an individual savings account since it was redundant and I was earning higher interest at another bank.

Renewing Our Rental Lease

Tomorrow my husband and I are renewing the lease on our apartment. The good news is our rent will decrease around $25 each month for a yearly savings of $300. It’s a small amount, but if we can reduce our expenses, I’m happy.

What about you?  Are you making any changes to your plans? Are you able to survive and maybe thrive through this financial mess?
