I recently joined the College Money Network, a fantastic group of personal finance bloggers focusing on college students and graduates. I encourage you to check out their blogs this week. It’s amazing while we have the similar circumstances on money and college, we have such a collection of different views.

What’s our purpose?

The College Money Network is a diverse group of college students, grad students, and recent graduates who blog about personal finance in a way that’s easy for other college students and twenty somethings to relate. By forming a network, we hope to provide a single location where college students and twenty somethings can visit for the best information on personal finance.

First Step Personal Finance Challenge: Budget My Last Paychecks

I had a happy surprise yesterday. I was reading Credit Withdrawal‘s wonderful post on getting interested in finance and noticed that I got tagged. It’s a personal finance challenge started by Mrs. Micah to:

Find one step you can take to make your financial system better or more organized.

In view of my situation, my first step is budgeting my last 3 paychecks. I will get them Friday (hopefully).Last night I was looking at the numbers and reviewing my regular budget. I wrote it out and I can pay my monthly obligations with it. I’ll have a bit less to put into attacking my debt then I like, but I want to keep my savings in tact.

I want to have the budget set up BEFORE, so I won’t waste the lump sum. Having 3 weeks pay at once will look very tempting, but I want to act responsibly AND reduce job hunting stress.

I’m going to tag the College Money Network on this and see who will respond. Tomorrow, I look forward to giving some more information on the network.

My Game Plan for Employment (Part 1)

I’m fortunate enough to have money saved and my husband working to have time tolook for a job. Being frugal has kept expenses relatively low and takes some pressure of looking for employment. I’m going to look for a good fit this time with my job and ask better questions.

With how they ended it, I doubt my past clients will know what happened.

Here are some steps I’m working through:

  • Reviewing my last job. No, I’m not a sadist trying to rehash a bad experience. I’m trying to analyze what I loved, liked, disliked, and hated about this past job.
  • Reseach and learn from job sites and books. I have an excuse to go the library to find some books to work on my resume. I’m curently examining Brazen Careerist and he archives for informatin on sucessfully find a job and asking the right questions.
  • Updating my resume online and hardcopy. I’ve updated my resume on Monster, Career Builder, LinkedIn, and a local job site. I’m calling to see if the carer center at my old university can help spruce it up.
  • Checking with people about my hunt. I’ve already let some people know about my job skills and what I’m looking for in a job. I think what helps is that I’ve done this for people. I believe that if you genuinely try to help others, they will do the same.
  • Going to relax and catch up with some friends. I’ve been pretty busy and I think this time will allow me to spend some time with famiy and friends. I invited my mom to come see Batman: The Dark Knight this upcoming weekend. I saw my uncle and brother this
  • Volunteer. I’m going to look around and see what I can get into. I personally think helping others is a great way to spend your time. Sometimes you can feel a bit too much self pity (I do a times) and volunteering reminds you that there are six billion other people out there.

It’s just something I pieced together. I’m open to any suggestions. Please leave any links to posts, articles, and openings in the comments. I’d like to use them for Part 2 of this series as well and I will give proper credit and links. After all, at some point e’re all going to look for jobs, I’m just looking sooner than you.  :)

Today was My Last Day

I came in to work today and I was immediately taken to the conference room. They decided to honor my resignation and I was to leave today. They would pay me for my last two weeks, but they thought it was ‘best for everyone’ that I leave today. I did not have a chance to say good bye to my co-workers.

I’m glad I already have pretty much everyone’s number, so I will give them a call and keep in touch. I’m curious to see what they plan on my accounts. I was just speaking with one of them Friday about how we were going to catch up on Tuesday.

I just wanted to thank the support I’ve gotten. I didn’t read as many posts as I usually do since I was working on my performance review.

I also have some good news: I’m a member of the College Money Network! More details to come, but wanted you know our purpose:

The College Money Network is a group of personal finance blogs run by college students, grad students, and recent grads. We have come together to bring you the best content possible to help college students and recent grads improve their finances in college and after college. While we all write about personal finance, we come from diverse backgrounds, and each one of us has our own unique perspective and voice. By joining forces, we will work together to provide you with the most informative and entertaining content on issues that affect twenty-somethings like us.

I hope that this will benefit many people. I honestly think this will be a good thing.

I Resigned From My Job

I thought yesterday was ok, except for the extra assignment they wanted to add to me with no compensation. Long story short, a whole can of worms opened up. I decided to cut my losses and resigned today with my two week notice. Life is too short to deal with stress. I was frustrated and disappointed with how 2 managers approached me (and 2 other employees) with the second round.

” We need you in the conference room, Now” is not a great way to open a discussion, especially when I was in the middle of an assignment. I came right away since they were my supervisors. Then one manager accused me of disrespecting her yesterday.

Huh?

I asked what she meant and she said it was a comment I mentioned at the beginning. My comment was about paperwork, since I asked days ago if there was any. Now I had paperwork to fill out that I could have before and it would’ve saved time. So I asked and that was that. She didn’t bring it up during the meeting and she smiled and joked around with me. Now she was upset?! I made an apology that she was offended, since that wasn’t my intention.(I also could’ve given better answers if given time before to prepare.)

Now her issue was the about the fact that I left my job description in your inbox and crossed off the new account. (Our assignment was to review the sheet, update our job description to make it current, and return it to her.) She asked if this was my way of telling her I was saying no. I told her we already established that we would have a meeting and I was completing the assignment given to me.  (At this point the tone of her voice was very angry and I was literally praying to keep my cool.) She asked why and I told her I spoke with my co-worker who is currently handling the account and it would be too much.

My other manager then asked was I refusing to accept the assignment. I was. Before they launched to another attack, I stopped for a moment and informed them that I was resigning. I also said I had the paperwork at my office. I went back and handed them my resignation letter.

There’s more to the day, but it’s pretty long winded. I’ll think about it this weekend since my boss wants with the job, but I find it hard to see how this can be rectified. Money is not the issue. Respect is the issue and I feel that they handled this inappropriately.

Chill in the Room for My 90 Day Review

My performance review went well. I’m doing great at my job and was surprised to hear some compliments on my work quality. I’m glad some people notice the extras that I do. I put a lot of effort into my job. I get a long very well with my coworkers and we work together to get things done, even if it is not in our job description.

We reviewed my strengths and weaknesses, discussed my goals and how I plan to achieve them, and my likes and dislikes about my position specifically.

The manager was wrapping up it up and she asked me if there was anything I wanted to discuss.

I did.

I got some things off my chest that I didn’t necessarily like about the company, including:

  • Lack of transparency
  • Communication issues on client meetings
  • A misstep that about my login for the main program (3 months to find out I already had one set up specifically for me)

I had said something on these issue to different managers, but I wasn’t happy with how they were settled. I wanted it on my record that these were a concern for me. After some clarification on what I wanted, they agreed to discuss it at next week’s meeting and thanked me for the input. She then tried to wrap it up, but then I asked what was the time frame for a review that would include consideration of a pay raise.

Basically in 2009 will be when they will discuss it. I was silent for a moment before I acknowledged this. My problem wasn’t that it would be my 1st anniversary before that was considered necessarily, but that I was told something else at my interview. (Which is a bit weird since she was the one who interviewed me).

As I was silent, the managers then mentioned that they wanted to bring an account onto my plate that had been switched from me and replaced with other assignments. This isn’t a small account with occasional orders; this is an account that would easily add 2-3 hours to my day. I know this because I’ve done back up for the woman handling it now, who is overwhelmed with a huge amount of clients.

They asked me if I could handle this workload and after thinking for a moment, I honestly told them it would take some work to fit into my schedule, but I could try to fit it in. I then asked about what raise would go with the job.

They said no raise. (They looked surprised I asked.)

I looked at them and I told them I wasn’t comfortable with that and I would have to think about it.

Talk about a temperature drop. We went from a happy meeting to a cool tone in a second. She asked what was the problem, since my predecessor did this account. I reminded her that:

  1. My job description did not include this account when I was hired.
  2. I have a slightly different assignment my predecessor couldn’t do.
  3. This account isn’t small enough to just tack on, it was a full blown job. (I wasn’t sure they knew that. They did. )

So the managers looked at each other and tried to explain to my that my assignments are easier than what my predecessor had. (There’s a reason she left: underpaid and overworked. I checked.)

I tried my best to calmly tell them that I would think about this and that I was leaving. (At that point I was really upset.)

I’ve really thought about it and I came to my conclusion. I’m not going to do this assignment. When I was hired for the job, I was told that 80% was handling replenishment for one very large client and the rest were a few small clients and handling their customer service, which by the way I don’t really care for. I figured since most of my job was something I did enjoy, I’d take the job.

In actuality, besides my main assignment, one other account takes a good bit of time and I do more customer service than discussed (I’m dealing with about a couple of hundred buyers). If I accept this assignment (even with a raise), then approximately 50% of my time would be doing customer service responsibilities and I don’t want to do that. Customer service at my current job is very time consuming. The specific account they want added is very time consuming, as it would give me a few hundred more buyers to service.

We’ll see how it goes when I tell them that today. 

Any ideas on how I should handle this? Has anybody else had this experience?

Juggling Two Loan Payments and an Upcoming Performance Review

I finished my morning assignments and now I’m just watching the phones since we’re down a person today at work. I have a few minutes, so I decided to update you guys on how my debt is going.

I have two loan payments to worry about now: my car loan and my student loan. My first student loan payment is due July 23, 2008. My car payment is due July 22, 2008, but I schedule the payment a week earlier to ensure it gets there in time. The student loan is at 6.5% and that crazy car loan is at 13.75%. I signed up for an automatic debit from my individual checking, so I get a small discount on my interest rate on my student loan.

My plan is to make my minimum student loan payments and pay aggressively on my car loan. Once my car loan is eliminated, then I’ll roll half of that amount over to my student loans and save the other half. If I get a raise, which I highly doubt due to previous employees being denied raises, then that extra money would go to the car loan payment. (I can almost hear my husband laughing at the idea of me getting a raise. He knows where I work.)

My 3 Month Performance Review is tomorrow (technically I made 3 months last month) and I should get a good evaluation. My clients get their orders and I do my best to keep them happy and going smoothly.

I reviewed my performance and here’s what I jotted down:

Strengths:

  • Team Player: Many people say this, but I did keep track of when I went beyond my job. I averaged an extra project a week helping someone else out.
  • Takes initiative: I started a weekly breakfast group that has taken off. It started as 3 people, but now more than half the company volunteered to bring in breakfast on a rotational basis.
  • Organized: My training wasn’t too thorough (learn as I went and 1 session with the previous employee) and the manual I was given did have some out of date and incorrect information.

Weaknesses:

  • If someone interrupts me while I’m working, it takes me awhile to get back on track.
  • I tend to say ‘yes’ without checking my schedule.

When I get home tonight, I’ll try and double check this list. I’ll finish up some prep work before the performance meeting tomorrow, so please wish me well.
